iDefrag 5.3.0
Upgrade to macOS Mojave Registered: Mar 21, 2002 After you run it, drag the app to applications. Conclusion: a defragmentation application is not really needed on Mac OS X, but it sure speeds up your disk, no matter how big it may be and certainly if you’re running video and audio applications. iDefrag costs 22.00 Euros. For that price you can keep your disks in “optima forma”. Need a free defragger for Mac - Mac OS We generally recommend using an Internet source since they will have been tested the most. However it is usually safe to use your installation media which will be the quickest option, especially if you have a slow Internet connection.

Get SuperDuper! (you don't have to register/pay for doing what you need to do).
The one you need is iDefrag. It's not free, but it's not expensive, either.

Works as advertized.
As for the programmable optimization algorithm... it uses the same classification engine used to color the blocks on the display, and can be configured using arbitrary expressions in a simple text file. For instance, say you wanted to group all files whose name contains in “Barn” and that are between 10KB and 10MB in size into a single place; or perhaps you want to place everything from the “/sw” directory in the same part of the disk.
I think it's a pretty great program. I had settled on it (and as is often the case for me) then just worked with it as my tool of choice, not being the type to keep searching for that even better tool. After my scare with the HD not mounting I wondered if there might be a more popular app for this and am still open to suggestions. But it seems to do what it says.
